S & T Firewood uses select hardwood primarily sugar maple, red maple, beech, ash, yellow and white birch and occasionally wild cherry. In conjunction with Vermont state and local foresters the trees are selected and harvested with the health of the forest in mind.....random clear cutting is a thing of past. Through this type of supervised select cutting, wood energy can use our forest resource wisely and enhance the health and vigor of our forests for future generations

Once the log length firewood reach the yard, the logs are placed on a conveyor and enter the mill. There they are cut to 16" lengths, split and placed in steel baskets. The baskets are then taken into the wood fired dry kilns where they remain for 2-3 days at 150-200 degrees, removing over 1000 pounds of water from each cord. This in turn increases the firewoods burning efficiency by nearly 1 million BTU's per cord and increases the heat value by 25%. These figures compiled by the U.S. Forest Product Laboratory.

After kiln-drying the firewood leaves Vermont for the long trip to North Reading (our farm) awaiting your call. From the time the firewood leaves Vermont and reaches it's final destination....your home, it is protected from rain, snow and ice so that you can always be assured of a clean, dry, viable product.
